About the Island[]

The largest island in the archipelago is called the Maunga Nui Island and it is made up of a series of 11 individual biomes including marine estuaries and wetlands, arboreal forests, snow-capped mountains, fjords, and extinquished volcanoes. To the north of the main island are a series of islets connected to the second tallest mountain of the archipelago next to an ancient collapsed volcano called Darkwood Island. To the south of the main island are series of smaller islands called Windy Islands consisting of fjords. An active volcano is located to the north-east of the archipelago called the Golem Island and is the site of a top secret drone program. A small island to the west is called Egg Island right next to an off-limits land mass almost as big as the Maunga Nui island called Moa island.

80 million years ago, the archipelago first broke away from the landmass that would eventually become New Zealand and Australia. According to Dr. Hanover, the Golem island volcano produced up to 1000 cubic kilometers of ash, which would create the surrounding islands as the ash cooled down.

Later its first inhabitants, known as The Kings of the Forest or the Ancients, vanished long ago, leaving only relics of their ancient civilization. Beginning in the 16th century, the island was discovered by Europeans and they attempted to colonize it with sea forts and trading posts but were eventually run off by the locals. In 1770, James Cook was the first to discover the South Pacific archipelago. In the 19th century, the Europeans came back in force, this time in search of gold, and established more permanent settlements. It would later become a strategic location during World War II and then home to American airbases during the Cold War.

In 1953, the island was leased to the US to sway Soviet influence in the area.

The local population was evacuated, and a military presence was maintained until 1996.

In the mid-1990s, Mads Schulz, a retired U.S. Marine who was stationed on one of those airbases, decided to start his own community, the Homesteaders, that broke free from society and oppose humanity’s dependence on industrialization.

Yet in 2008, CEO Jace Skell purchased the lease from the U.S. Government and converted the whole island into the headquarters of Skell Technology, with a vision of turning it into a hub for the design, research, development, and production of artificial intelligence and drone technology. The construction started in 2009. By 2016, the construction of the island was complete. The island consists of a city which is home to all employees of the tech company as "World 2.0". In 2020, drone production begins.

In 2024, Auroa was home to more than 30,000 souls. Internal security has been entrusted to the Private Military Company named Sentinel Corp.

After Skell Tech arrived on Auroa, the Homesteaders cohabited peacefully with the company until a bomb exploded at Skell Technologies headquarters building. Jace Skell then hired Sentinel to provide security. The archipelago was then taken over by Trey Stone, Cole D. Walker and his group of rogue Ghost Recon operators known as the Wolves in 2023. Since then, the island has become a stronghold for Stone, Walker and the Wolves after Operation: Citadel. When all communications systems were cut off, the island was disconnected from the entire world.

The US government and CIA's Deputy Director Peter Miles noticed this after the sinking of the USS Seay. They launched Operation Greenstone that deployed 32 Ghosts to investigate.

Trivia[]

  • Auroa's name is based on a locality situated in southern Taranaki, a region in the west of New Zealand's North Island.
  • Its exact location is 49° 24' 03" S, 159° 02' 28" W. However, the World Lore states that Aurora is 2000 miles from Auckland on the Ring of Fire. These coordinates are nowhere near the Ring of Fire.
  • The archipelago was planned to have more islands, one is Moa Island, currently visible in the ingame map, partially covered by fog, and an unnamed island, east of Golem Island, visible on some ingame posters within some Sentinel bases. Currently, there are no plans for Moa Island, however you can now go to Golem Island in Conquest mode, or though a glitch in story mode.
