“ Since Castro's death in 2006, the Cuban people have had a succession of increasingly incompetent thugs in charge, and thankfully, that's going to change. The elections are going to occur in early May, and our job is to make sure that they go off without a hitch. What that means is that we've been volunteered to make sure that the elements that want to bring back the bad old days don't get a chance to win the elections at gunpoint. - Watchful Yeoman mission briefing”
The Cuban Conflict was a conflict in which Ghost Recon took part in 2010.
Background
When Fidel Castro passed away in 2006, Castro’s heirs were unable to keep the fire of his revolution burning, leading to a popular uprising toppling the Communist regime. In its wake, a fragile hope for democracy emerged. The interim President, Pedro Ebana, promised free elections, and requested international assistance to safeguard those elections. However, there were those in Cuba who did not want to see a democratic regime, and they would do anything it took – subversion, violence, or open revolution – to make certain that Cuba’s future was the one they created for it.
From the midst of the chaos, the call went out for the Ghosts. Their mission: to ensure the integrity of the Cuban elections by thwarting any attempts made to subvert them.
The War
The Ghosts conducted operations against arms and drug shipping operations by agents and allies of Ariel Priego, the ultimate aim being to prevent any strong-arming of voters on election day. When election day came, the Ghosts were responsible for protecting a voting center in Havana, a task that proved none too easy as men loyal to Priego assaulted the building and took the hostages elsewhere in the city. Unsurprisingly, Priego loses the election badly. Becoming desperate, he asked for help from his backers in Colombia, and FARC sent in hired soldiers to take Cuba by force. The Ghosts assisted in defeating this effort, and FARC soon decided to cut its losses.
Running out of allies, time, and options, Priego fled to an old fortress in a hilled section of Cuba. The Ghosts were ordered to assault the fortress and capture Priego alive. As if he was killed, he could be made into a martyr all too easily, something that would be highly detrimental to the new Cuban government. The Ghosts succeeded, destroying a helicopter that Priego had intended to use for his escape. Trapped and with his remaining soldiers killed, Priego surrendered.
