Santa Muerte is the folk saint of holy death, a female, skeletal Grim Reaper. She is often dressed in robes, holding a scythe, globe, or hourglass. Her many nicknames include La Niña Blanca (The White Girl), La Flaquita (The Skinny Lady), La Madrina (The Godmother), and many more. While she has millions of followers in Mexico and the US, in recent years she has also become associated with narcos. Many narcos pray to Santa Muerte and perform rituals to protect themselves. Santa Blanca promotes the idea that their work has a religious pursue and all their actions, no matter how violent, are acts of God.
The Cult has its roots in real-life folklore.
