All contact has been lost with Auroa. This archipelago is home to Skell Technology, a high-tech company. You are sent there with your unit for a recon mission, but your helicopters are shot down: Skell Tech has fallen into the wrong hands. The Wolves, a lethal ex–US military unit gone rogue, have taken over the island. Led by your ex-brother-in-arms, Colonel Cole D. Walker, they have reprogrammed Skell’s drones into killing machines and are ready to use them, no matter the casualties.
- Description

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is an open world action-adventure role-playing game that is a sequel to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, and the latest installment in the Ghost Recon franchise. It takes place on a fictional archipelago called Auroa in the Pacific Ocean. Unlike past games, no mission briefing is given. Instead, the game puts the player's survival skills to the test in overcoming the dangers on a remote island.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released on October 4th, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with next generation enhancements released in late 2020 for the Xbox Series S and X and PlayStation 5 consoles. It was noted to be feature complete on April 5, 2022 by the Ghost Recon social media pages.

Publisher's summary[]

Somewhere in the South Pacific lies the remote Auroa Archipelago, a vast land of diverse biomes that range from lush rainforests to snowy peaks. Now, it’s home to Skell Technology, an enigmatic technology giant. Initially interested in a remote testing site for its autonomous drones, the Silicon Valley company eventually turned Auroa into its “World 2.0,” a high-tech, high-security utopia of sustainable eco-cities and robotics research.

Face your deadliest enemy yet, The Wolves, former Ghosts who have betrayed their country. Led by the charismatic Colonel Cole D. Walker they have taken control of Auroa for an unknown purpose. Now in control of Auroa’s powerful drone technology The Wolves and their allies Sentinel will hunt you mercilessly across Auroa.

Development[]

The game was mysteriously teased all the way back in April 12th, 2018 in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands with the release of the Splinter Cell themed live event, with Sam Fisher talking about technology that makes soldiers like him and the Ghosts useless, referring to the drones in Breakpoint.

With the release of Operation Archangel in Wildlands, upon scanning a QR code situated on Twitch's drone, players would be redirected to a website detailing the drone's technical information by Skell Technology.

Collectibles in Operation Silent Spade referred to various drones produced by Skell Technology.

On May 2nd, 2019, the last live event called Operation Oracle was released, which included a bunch of references to Breakpoint's lore and the main antagonist, Cole D. Walker.

On May 9th, 2019, the official announcement trailer for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released.

At E3 2019 on June 10th, Ubisoft allowed sign-ups for the Breakpoint closed beta, which started on September 5th, with a guaranteed beta access through pre-orders. Open beta would run a week prior to the game's release

The first technical test was open from May 31st to June 3rd, 2020. The second technical test was also open from July 26th to July 29th, 2020. Both technical tests were under NDAs (meaning that players who were invited weren't allowed to discuss or share any gameplay under any circumstances), and were only available to players in North America and western Europe.

On August 2nd, 2019, Ubisoft revealed unqiue features available for the PC version. Features included full keyboard mapping customization, partnerships with Tobii, Discord, AMD, as well as a standalone PC Benchmark.[1]

Ubisoft also announced the Ghost Recon Rewards Program, which gave the players rewards for completing challenges and milestones in Ghost Recon Wildlands and redeem them for Breakpoint. As a recap, Ubisoft released an article about the list of challenges/milestones and the rewards you get for completing them.[2] The event was live until September 27th, 2020. The players who completed these tasks gain access to the rewards across multiple saves

  • (Note, that after Ghost Experience update, with the gear score turned off by the player's choice, you WILL NOT be able to talk to Holt about the rewards. He can only be talked to about them with the gear score turned on and the dialogue will be available just once per save, unlike the other discussions Nomad can have with him. As a side note, some of the rewards are also only available with the gear score turned on).

On October 4th, 2019, Ghost Recon Breakpoint was officially released.

On November 28th, 2019, the first and ultimately the only raid, Project Titan, was released, with the closed off ash sprouting volcanic Golem Island opened up.

Through January 29th to February 6th, 2020, the first live event themed after the Terminator franchise was finally released after being teased all the way back during 2019's E3 event.

The Vulkan API was also released, which added an option to switch between the default DirectX 11 version and Vulkan. The API gives the game a significant boost in performance thanks to new rendering technology.

On April 14th and 15th, 2020, a smaller update was released for the game with various bug fixes.

On July 15th, 2020, teammates controlled by A.I similar to Ghost Recon Wildlands were finally included, along with a major overhaul to the gunsmith system.

Through July 16th to July 29th, 2020, the second live event, Resistance!, was released.

On September 15th, 2020, Episode 3: Red Patriot (formelly called Transendence) was released.

On November 9th, 2020, Ghost Experience 2.0 was released, which included multiple gameplay changes, options to turn on or off world events and Golem Island opened up to be explored outside of the raid.

On November 16th, 2020, enhancements for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X versions of Ghost Recon Breakpoint were released.

On January 19th, 2021, the third live event, Operation Amber Sky, was released, which added a crossover with Team Rainbow with the addition of optional teammates from Rainbow Six Siege. Along with that, optional hazard zones were added to the map part of the event missions, which can only be explored with unique gas masks and filters included in the event.

On April 9th, 2021, Ubisoft announced the second road map for upcoming content in celebration of the Ghost Recon franchise's 20th anniversary, such as the third Ghost Experience update, community contests, a Tomb Raider themed treasure hunt and reportedly the biggest content update coming to the game, Operation Motherland.

On May 8th, 2021, the Teammate Experience update was released, which included a bunch of new customization options for the A.I teammates, new challenges to boost up their skills and the ability for the A.I to use their class techniques.

On July 27th, 2021, the Relics of the Ancients Tomb Raider themed treasure hunt was added to the game in celebration of the said franchise's 25th anniversary, which included rewards known from the Tomb Raider franchise.

On September 29th, 2021, Ghost Recon Breakpoint received an additional Deluxe Edition to the game, which includes the Infiltration Pack and updated cover arts for the digital editions.

On October 1st, 2021, Ubisoft announced that they will be releasing a showcase in October 5th in celebration of the series' 20th anniversary, which includes the reveal of a new project.

On October 5th, 2021, Operation Motherland was finally officially revealed with a release date set for November 2nd, 2021.

On November 2nd, 2021, Operation Motherland was released with additional customization, a new game mode called Conquest, follow-up to the story set 3 months since the end of Operation Greenstone, changes to skill point usage and a new gadget, the optical camouflage first seen in Ghost Recon Future Soldier and briefly in Wildlands.

On November 18th, 2021, Ubisoft announced a month long campaign in collaboration with a UN Playing for the Planet -initiative that involved the planting of a virtual tree in the Auroa archipelago. For each tree planted until December 20th, 2021, Ubisoft pledges €0.15 to Ecologi.

On December 7th, 2021, Ubisoft announced that they are implementing a brand new NFT system for their games, starting with Ghost Recon Breakpoint. However, due to overwhelming negative feedback, the marketplace became to a close.

On April 5, 2022, Ubisoft announced the end of support for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint for good after 3 and a half years of its life cycle, marking Conquest mode the last major update for the game as well as the latest and last Ghost Recon title released this date.

Somewhere in December 2023, update file size of 1.45GB was released on Uplay app but the cause of the newly released update is unknown, unannounced change log.

Plot[]

Main article: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint/Missions

The game is set in the year 2025, six years after the events of Operation Kingslayer and chronologically approximately one year after the conflict involving Raven's Rock and Bodark.

Prior to the events of the game, Skell Technology comes under increasing public scrutiny when they are faced with mounting evidence that its products are falling into the hands of corrupt regimes, whilst its technology is implicated in an assassination of a political candidate by an armed drone. The situation escalates further when the USS Seay, an American cargo ship sinks off the coast of the Auroa archipelago and all contact with both the island and its inhabitants are subsequently cut off from the outside world. Determined to investigate the cause, CIA Deputy Director Peter Miles initiates Operation Greenstone, deploying a platoon size of 32 Ghosts operators under Nomad's leadership from the USS Wasp to re-establish contact with Auroa and determine the circumstances of the USS Seay's sinking. However the insertion ends in disaster when the helicopters carrying the platoon to the island are attacked by a swarm of Legion drones. Nomad is the sole able-bodied survivor of his squadmates, whilst Holt got seriously injured in the crash, and Midas is missing in action.

Shortly after obtaining a weapon and attempting to find a working radio to communicate with the USS Wasp, Nomad witnesses a firefight between several Ghosts led by Weaver and multiple unidentified individuals. The firefight abruptly ends when Weaver is executed by Cole D. Walker, a former member of the Ghosts who is now leading the assault force, known as the Wolves. Additionally, Nomad discovers a private military company called Sentinel is also operating on the island alongside the Wolves. Eventually, Nomad manages to reach Erewhon, a secret mountain hideout that is kept hidden from both Sentinel as well as the Wolves. With the assistance of ex-U.S. Marine Mads Schulz, Erewhon's de facto leader and his wife Maria, Nomad learns that the drone swarms that ambushed the platoon have imposed a defensive perimeter around the island; preventing anyone from entering or leaving the Archipelago. To help bring down the drones protecting the island, Nomad works with another survivor, fellow Ghost Sergeant Major Josiah Hill and is instructed to locate Maurice Fox, Skell Tech's chief mathematician, his daughter Harmony, and eventually Jace Skell himself.

Upon reaching Skell, Nomad discovers that Hill has been secretly working with Walker and the two offer Nomad a place by their side. Nomad refuses and manages to evacuate Skell to Erewhon.

It is up to the Ghosts to survive and carry out the original mission, as well as taking down the rogue Ghosts and the Sentinel Corporation.

Injury System[]

Now when your Ghost takes damage they may also become injured. These injuries will slow you down and reduce your combat effectiveness requiring additional time and resources to heal your Ghost back to peak fighting condition. There are three tiers of injury-

  • Minor Injury: You have a limp when walking/sprinting, stamina is reduced, and aiming can be wobbly.
  • Severe Injury: You are bleeding out, your limp gets much worse, reducing your speed, and stamina is greatly reduced.
  • Critical Injury: You are unable to sprint, stamina is almost nil, prone and crouch speed is severely reduced, you can only walk, and you can only defend yourself with your sidearm.

Bandages will cure any of the above but only one injury stage at a time in descending order. Syringes can be used to heal minor and severe injuries, but cannot be used for critical injuries.

Terrain and Stamina[]

Traversing the world of Auroa will push your Ghost to their limits. Steep slopes will make you slip and fall, traversing water will slow you down, and snow will plow in your wake. Properly managing your stamina will be essential to surviving and fighting back.

The Bivouac[]

GRB Biovac

The Homesteaders have prepared safe spaces around the archipelago, where they can rest when out on scavenging runs or hunting expeditions. Each is signposted by a campfire that's been left burning, creating a large plume of smoke. As a Ghost, the smoke brings unwanted attention, so the first thing to do upon setting up a Bivouac is to put out the fire. The location will be marked on the map, and the Ghost can instantly travel to it any time, as long as he's not in combat. There are 115 Bivouacs around Auroa.

Resting at a Bivouac will heal injuries and recover fatigue. It also can be used to craft useful items, change your class, or make tactical preparations for the next trip into the wilds.

  • By opening the Preparation menu, you'll be able to select a topic to focus on that will be apply a buff to your character for the next 60 minutes.
  • If you've purchased any vehicles from Maria in Erewhon, you'll be able to select one of them from your garage and a Homesteader will deliver it to a nearby location once you leave the Bivouac.
  • When breaking camp, you'll also be able to set the time of day at which you deploy.
  • When multiple players are occupying a Bivouac during co-op play, you'll be able to trade consumable items (such as grenades, rations or syringes) between players, and check each other's statistics.

Buddy Carry[]

Leave no man behind. When an ally is down and needs help instead of giving medical attention in the middle of a firefight you can quickly sling them over your shoulder and move to safety to get them back on their feet.

Prone Camo[]

As a Ghost you can disappear into your environment making you nearly invisible to your enemies. Use this feature to setup an ambush or avoid detection when cover is not available.

Advanced Enemy AI[]

The Wolves and their allies are experienced elite soldiers and will communicate amongst themselves to hunt you down if detected. With a wide variety of AI archetypes and behaviors no two encounters will be the same.

Adaptive Cover[]

An innovative cover system will automatically adapt your Ghost’s body position to match available cover and execute advanced tactics such as leaning to aim around corners

Customize Your Ghost[]

Create a unique Ghost to look and play your way. With multiple classes and deep systems featuring thousands of options for both functional and cosmetic customization, no two Ghosts will look and play the same. Weapons, gear, and equipment are craftable, customizable, and upgradeable using items and resources you’ll find across Auroa.

Gameplay changes[]

Due to player feedback, Ubisoft has added various options over the course of the updates to change how the game plays.

The first update was the Ghost Experience, which allowed the player to change between the standard Gear Mode and the classic mode, which plays essentially the same as Ghost Recon Wildlands.

Second update introduced A.I controlled team mates, which can be given similar orders as in Wildlands. They can be turned on and off and be customized. Later the player was given also an option to turn off their and the team mates' second main weapon.

A third update involved the addition of members from Team Rainbow and the player was given the option to switch between Ghosts or Rainbow Six. The player is now also able to level up the team mates' abilities.

Raids[]

Main article: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint/Raids

Raid 1 - Project Titan[]

Our first raid takes you to a remote island with an active volcano, where you’ll face lethal challenges and opponents. Even with up to four co-op players and top-tier communication, you’ll need to use every skill you’ve learned to survive Project Titan. Free to play and fully replayable, raids are also a chance to earn exclusive rewards. And they'll get even hotter after release, with new weekly rules to keep players on their toes.
- Description

For the first time in Ghost Recon history, Breakpoint included a four-player raid set on the Golem Island test facility.

Due to negative player feedback, a second raid was scrapped, which presumably would have taken place on the restricted Moa Island.

PVP[]

Breakpoint includes a 4v4 PVP game mode, Ghost War. It comes with 6 maps, 4 classes, 2 modes as well as dedicated servers and shared progression between PvE/PvP. The two modes are Elimination and Sabotage. Elimination is essentially a team deathmatch mode, where one team wins when the other has no remaining players standing. Sabotage is an attack/defend game mode, much like 'Search and Destroy' in the Call Of Duty franchise, and much like the 'Bomb' game mode in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege. There are two objectives, which the defenders must defend and the attackers must plant a bomb on. See Ghost War page for more information.

    • The Off-Road Pack will give you access to two powerful vehicles, the Trail TX Motorbike and the GX Spider Buggy, along with four customization options for each vehicle ;

As opposed to Wildlands where the player had to create a new character in order to play Narco Road and Fallen Ghosts DLCs, Deep State and Red Patriot are incorporated to the main game and can start the story missions seamlessly while in the game, though one can start each episode at any team, breaking the story continuity, especially with Episode 2, so it is best to advance in numerical order.

Bowman is calling Nomad back to Auroa: the Outcasts need help maintaining peace on the island.
- Teaser trailer description

The Conquest mode was the last major content drop released to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint before the developement was concluded few months after its release.

An event called Operation Motherland was teased in spring 2021 in a roadmap set for release in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Ghost Recon franchise. In the 20th anniversary livestream, the operation was officially revealed with a teaser trailer and a release date set for November 2nd, 2021.

On October 26th, 2021, the official trailer for the operation was released. The story is set a few months after the end of Operation Greenstone and Nomad's extraction from the islands. The Auroa archipelago has been a major target for countries of the world seeking Skell Tech's techological wonders. Sentinel and the Wolves have teamed up with the notorious ultra-nationalist Russian special forces group Bodark. Nomad and the Ghosts have been sent back to secure a neutral governing force to the islands in the form of Haruhi Ito's Outcasts, with Karen Bowman returning to represent CIA during the operation.

The operation brings a new gamemode called Conquest, where each province, including the Golem Island, have been turned into sectors similar to the ones seen in Ghost Recon Wildlands and its DLC Fallen Ghosts. With each province taken down, the environment changes along with the presence of the enemy and friendly factions on the islands. The player's goal is to take down 4 different enemy bosses, by clearing out the respective province belonging to said boss, similar to Wildlands, except each boss has multiple provinces tied to their name. The player has the option to eliminate or safely extract the bosses to the rebels waiting at a nearby rendzevous point. Once the three sub-bosses have been dealt with and the main island is liberated, Golem Island is opened up for the final target. The player has the option to restart the Conquest mode's progress at any time from the map menu.

Motherland introduces new enemy archeotypes, weapons, outfits and an upgradeable optical camoflauge first seen in Ghost Recon Future Soldier. In addition iconic gear sets belonging to John Kozak from Future Soldier, Scott Mitchell from Advanced Warfighter and Alicia Diaz from Ghost Recon 2 are included.

Plant A Tree[]

Main article: Plant A Tree

Ubisoft announced a collaboration with the Playing for the Planet -initiative set by the United Nations by pledging to reduce its carbon footprint and encourage its communities to do more for the planet. Part of the Ecologi-campaign, a social enterprise dedicated to planting trees via the funding of climate projects, the player can help the growth of new trees by following an in-game quest, which involves planting trees at various locations in the Auroa archipelago. For each tree planted in the game until December 20, 2021, Ubisoft will give €0.15 (roughly 0.17 USD) to Ecologi, up to a maximum of €40 000 (roughly $43k), to finance reforestation projects with its partners.

Upon planting the tree seed, players will receive an in-game gear patch representing a tree and the “Gardener” title. The planted tree and rewards will remain in the game even after this initiative ends. The initiative can be further supported by purchasing from the store the Snow Woods Ghillie availble for a limited time. The suit includes a hood, top and pants. For each Snow Woods Ghillie Bundle sale, 5€ will be forwarded to Ecologi.

The total amount forwarded to Ecologi will be disclosed after the campaign concludes on December 20.
