The L22A2 is a British compact assault rifle. It is an upgraded variant of the previous L22A1, which was reportedly never adopted. The L22A2 can be seen as a compact version of the L85A2 assault rifle, that is a standard issue weapon with the British Forces. This compact assault rifle was adopted in 2003-2004. It is used only in small numbers. It is issued to vehicle drivers, helicopter and aircraft pilots, artillery and tank crews for emergency action outside of their vehicle. This weapon is also used by the special forces.
The L22A2 is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon. Comparing with the previous L22A1 a number of modifications were made to this weapon in order to improve its reliability and ease of use. All upgrades were made by the German Heckler & Koch company.
A fire mode selector is located well behind the magazine, on the left side of the receiver. It has settings for "semi-auto" and "full-auto".
It looks like this weapon comes with 20-round capacity magazines. Though it is also compatible with standard 30-round magazines of the L85A2 assault rifle, as well as other standard M16-type magazines.
