The Makarov is an early Cold War era pistol of Soviet origin. It was developed in the late 1940's to replace the older Tokarev pistol and is one of the most numerous pistols in the world.
The design of the Makarov was influenced by the German Walther PP pistol. The Makarov is a very simple pistol due to the use of the simple straight blowback mechanism. It is made out of steel and has plastic grip plates. The 9x18mm round, based on the 9mm Ultra, was specifically designed for this pistol.
The Makarov PM fires the 9x18mm round from an 8 round magazine. The improved Makarov PMM fires both the original and the increased pressure variant of the 9x18mm round from a 12 round magazine. As with most pistols the effective range is about 25 meters.
