Paula Madera is a character in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
She believes that technology can create a better world, but the pragmatic application of this belief proves more complicated than she originally thought. She doesn't know who to trust between Jace Skell, the visionary-turned-killer drone builder, and the Outcasts - protectors who have become more like terrorists.
Biography[]
It was evident Paula Madera was a genius from an early age. Born in Chicago, her parents sent her to an elite girls' school for advanced science classes. She is a lecturer at her alma mater, Stanford University, where she created and taught an engineering class and lab focused on energy storage integration in the Engineering Department. She holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Energy Systems Engineering and an M.S. in Energy Engineering from Stanford University, and has filed thirty-six patents. In 2018, the MIT Technology Review chose Paula Madera as #1 Innovator of the "40 under 40" for that Year. Jace Skell recruited her out-of school as Engineering Director at Skell Technology. In that role, she leads the development of technology strategies alongside Skell, and personally oversees the creation of the company's most cutting-edge prototypes.
Her husband David also worked as a scientist for Skell Tech. Suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), he is preserved in Skell Tech's cryonics facility.
Professional career[]
A true innovator, Madera has been a driving force behind Skell Tech's strength as a company. Jace Skell gave her a lot of trust early in her career, despite her youth. It paid off for both of them, and she has never worked for anyone else. She joined the Outcasts when she learned of Skell's Homo Deus Al project.
Relationships[]
Having been in a happy marriage with her husband, David, his illness and subsequent preservation left her cold and aloof to her colleagues and subordinates alike. Withdrawing to her work, Madera instead sought to continue, in an effort to cope with her grief. Despite having previously considered Jace Skell a good friend, his naive nature caused her to express concern with him. Unaware of Skell's efforts to cure David of his illness, their relationship quickly deteriorated when she witnessed her friend's sudden change in direction within the company's research. Her discovery of the Homo Deus AI project was the final straw in their already strained relationship as she quietly joined up with the Outcasts, but nevertheless, continued her work at Skell Tech.
Sometime after Sentinel took over the archipelago, Ghost Operator Nomad rescued her from confinement. Despite initially distrusting him, his subsequent rescue of her led to an affinity that developed between the two. His discovery of her husband in the cryogenic chamber resulted in the restoration of her relationship with Skell, however, simultaneously her relationship with the Outcasts dissolved as she discovered their involvement in the bombing of Skell offices that killed 30 employees and resulted in the arrival of Sentinel forces on the island.
