Standard AN/M8 white burning-type smoke grenade developed in the 1940s with a 1.2-2.0 second fuze, using hexachloroethane-zinc (HC) filler, producing a smoke screen for 105-150 seconds depending on weather conditions. Warnings issued with the grenade state it is not to be used in enclosed spaces unless soldiers are wearing breathing gear, due to producing "harmful hydrochloric fumes." The actual dangerous chemical produced is zinc chloride, which is caustic, can cause serious respiratory problems, and displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces. The steel grenade casing also becomes very hot when the grenade is producing smoke, to the point it can cause fires.
